1. FabFilter Pro Q2 – £134

Most Comprehensive EQ

FabFilter has become a household name in the audio production industry, and for good reason. Their plugins are some of the most intuitive and best sounding you can buy, and Pro Q2 is regarded as one of the best software EQ’s on the market.

Its reputation comes down to two things – Sound Quality and Features.

With regards to sound quality, it is extremely transparent, meaning there is no artificial colouration, ring or distortion of the sound. Instead, it affects audio in a natural, smooth, and very accurate manner. Free vst plugin windows.

The feature set that Pro Q2 holds is also above the bar. It allows for 24 bands – more than you’ll probably ever need, but there just in case nonetheless. Each band can also be independently controlled, and retain cliff-like slopes up to 96dB/Octave. There are also three distinct processing modes, each with their own uses – Zero Latency, Natural Phase and Linear Phase. This essentially turns the plugin into a multi-tool, allowing you to use Pro Q2 in any situation, from mixing to mastering to editing.

Alongside the features outlined, Pro Q2 looks stunning, and the interface has all kinds of hidden and helpful gems which make it a joy to use, such as the help-on-hover feature.

To summarise why Pro Q2 is in our Top 5 – It’s an extremely versatile EQ packed with unique and powerful features, superior sound quality, and can be used in any situation to help you get the best sound possible. The best bit – all of this is bundled into a package very low on CPU usage, so anybody can use it.

2. iZotope Neutron – £179 / £209

Best All-In-One

iZotope Neutron is an all-in-one mixing station, and has made our list because of just how useful it is.

Included is:

  • 12 band Dynamic EQ
  • 2x Multi-Band Compressors
  • Multi-Band Exiter
  • Multi-Band Transient Shaper
  • BS.1770 True Peak Limiter
  • 500+ Presets

One of the unique features about Neutron, and one we believe is the killer selling point is the Track Assistant. This makes full use of iZotope’s audio analysis technology to analyse your selection. It then automatically enhances your track, and creates a preset so you can save the settings for a later date. This is great as a starting point in which to build upon.

Don’t think this compromises on sound quality however, iZotope are some of the best in the business, and have re-built their audio processing engine to be the best sounding and most CPU efficient possible.

We believe Neutron is worthy of our top 5 because of its ease-of-use and extended capabilities. Track assistant makes very good suggestions to quickly improve your mix, the transient shaper is very extensive and offers a lot of control over your dynamics, and the separate modules make it simple to pick and choose what you want. Overall, a very solid plugin for beginners and veterans alike.

3. Celemony Melodyne – £79 – £529

Vocal Pitch Correction Magic

Melodyne owns the domain of the vocal pitch correction sub-category, and it’s not hard to see why. The plugin has been used by many Grammy award-winning producers such as Jan Kybert (Oasis), and Guy Sigsworth (Madonna) to name a few. The plugin itself has a Technical Grammy for “contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field”.

It has achieved this through a great workflow and natural sounding processing. Every edit, large or small doesn’t sound like an edit. The way Melodyne processes audio is so transparent you could fool even the best of ears.

The user interface makes editing audio a breeze. Each note in your vocal track is represented in a note view, allowing you easily move and shape the audio as you see fit, just like MIDI in a piano scroll.

This is in our top 5 because it’s a must have for anybody working with vocals – at some point, you will need it, it doesn’t matter to what extent.

Celemony has a great model regarding Melodyne editions, and doesn’t penalise the casual user on price. There are four main versions – Essential, Assistant, Editor and Studio. You can choose which one is the best for you, and upgrade to any other version any time at a discounted price.

4. Waves Renaissance Reverb – RRP£79 / Sale – £24.99

Best Reverb for your Buck

Reverb in our eyes is can transform a sound from great, to epic. It can make dry boring drums sound lively and full, or give real depth and size to a sound effect. Put simply, it will enhance anything you throw at it (depending on how you use it of course)!

One which really stands out to us however is the Renaissance Reverb by Waves. This little reverb is small but mighty. On-board are all necessary controls you’ll need to shape your sound, but there are no gimmicks or over-complicated settings to adjust, just a simple user interface.

The overall sound quality is exceptional, ranging from small rooms to lush ambience, all artifact free. There is also the inclusion of a shelf EQ, offering a smooth boost to your chosen frequency. The plugin itself is also very efficient, taking up little CPU. In a nutshell, this extra little investment will take you miles above the stock reverb in your DAW.

At the time of writing this, Renaissance Reverb is on sale for a price that could legitimately be called a steal, however, even the RRP doesn’t even come close to what this is worth, so rest assured this is a great investment.

Best Saturation Plugin

Saturation and distortion play a large role in audio production. It can add a certain warmth to your sound, and can really bring out detail in the frequency spectrum. While there are a lot of saturation plugins out there, none do it better that FabFilter Saturn.
