The origin of Supermassive

Supermassive is a product of years of developing delay and reverb algorithms by Sean Costello (the main guy behind Valhalla Room, Vintageverb and Plate). 1176 compressor vst free. You can imagine that during the progress of making those reverbs there are bound to be some algorithms which are not suited for the goal. That doesn’t mean they are bad or not useful. To quote Sean Costello; “ValhallaSupermassive is a celebration of those untamed delay algorithms. … They haven’t been polished to sound like the “real world.” They are unrepentantly digital, and unrepentantly un-natural. The Supermassive algorithms just want to be themselves.” Later in the same blog post he states that when he took the pressure off of the algorithms to behave like “normal”, ValhallaSupermassive came together quickly.

What can this plugin do?

With the origin of Valhalla Supermassive in mind, it will become clear that Supermassive is a combination of weird and unique delay and reverb effects. Personally I’ve used Supermassive mostly for delay effects so far, since I tend to go to ValhallaVintageVerb or Sanford Reverb for my reverb needs. You can use Supermassive for your basic delays, but I really like to give it some extra “vibe” to the delay and that’s where to the power of this free VST plugin lies.

The different modes and presets of Valhalla Supermassive

Best free vst plugins for fl studio vocals. If you’re familiar with the products of Valhalla, you know that they always supply you with a decent amount of well organized presets. This plugin has 73 factory presets, divided in 4 main categories: Echoes, Mods, Reverbs and SFX.

The sounds that you get from this plugin are mostly defined by the mode that it’s in. It has 8 different modes, named after celestial beings (because the algorithms behind it aren’t “real world” sounding). When exploring this plugin I often looked at the description of the mode since it really is your starting point when creating or editing a preset. Here’s a quick look at the different modes. (For a more descriptive explanation of each mode, check out the Valhalla blog):

Gemini: This is the most “conventional” of the Supermassive modes. It has a very quick attack time, and a natural exponential decay.

Hydra: This mode has a relatively fast attack time, and a very lush and long exponential decay.

Centaurus: A mode with a slower attack time, a shorter decay time, and a bit of “sustain” to the reverberation.

Sagittarius: A reverb/echo with a very long attack time, depending on the setting of Feedback.

Great Annihilator: Similar to Centaurus, but more massive. Slow attack with a fair amount of predelay, and super long decay times.

Andromeda: A super massive variant of the Sagittarius mode. Very slow attack with a fair amount of predelay, and decay times that can range into thousands of seconds.

Lyra: Quick attack time, long decay time, and very low echo density.

Capricorn: A larger version of Lyra. Quick attack time, long decay time, and a medium size bowl of echo density.

Here are some free Valhalla Supermassive presets I’ve made. The download contains 5, quite basic, presets (4 delay and 1 reverb). Download Typhonic Samples – Supermassive Basic here.

How to install custom presets for Valhalla Supermassive

  1. Locate your preset folder, for Windows it’s located here: C:ProgramDataValhalla DSP, LLCValhallaSupermassivePresets
  2. Place the Typhonic Samples – Supermassive Basics free presets folder in the “Designer” Folder. (Or any other folder that you’ve downloaded.)
  3. Reload your plugin.

If you can’t find your Valhalla Supermassive preset folder, open the plugin and choose “save as” at the preset manager. This will open the folder on your system. Or search your system for “Valhalla DSP, LLC”.

A fantastic free effect plugin

In short, Valhalla Supermassive is a great plugin that will definitely trigger your creativity! I will probably not use it for standard delay or reverb effects, but it will be very handy for creating one of a kind delay effects for genres like ambient and LoFi. It is really a nice addition to your effect arsenal and since it’s free, there’s nothing to lose! Have you used it already? Let me know what you think of Valhalla Supermassive!

ValhallaRoom is a versatile, true stereo algorithmic reverb. It features several original reverberation algorithms and has been designed from the ground up to produce a wide range of natural reverberation sounds. Sounds range from tight ambiences and rooms, through traditional hall and plate sounds, all the way up to vast modulated spaces. The algorithm designs have been influenced by some of the “classic” room simulation boxes, as well as state of the art modern theory.
ValhallaRoom has been designed from a psychoacoustic perspective. Instead of creating a simplified physical model of a simplified physical space, VRoom generates early and late acoustic energy that provides the spatial and phase cues needed to create an “idealized” room impression.
Unique Early reverb section allows user to dial in subtle and short bursts of early reverberation energy, as well as gated reverbs up to 1 second in length.
The Late section produces natural reverb decays ranging from 0.1 seconds to 100 seconds. The decay can be controlled in 3 adjustable frequency bands.
Both Early and Late reverb sections have adjustable modulation, to produce sounds ranging from lush chorusing, to subtle and natural long decays.
ValhallaRoom is true stereo. The Early and Late reverb sections are both stereo-in, stereo-out. The spread of energy between the stereo channels can be controlled over time, which helps preserve the input spatial image.
The GUI has been designed for easy navigation, and is inspired by Joseph Müller-Brockmann, NASA control panels, and Sesame Street.
Resizable GUI. Make it really big, or really tiny, or whatever suits you best.
A comprehensive preset browser makes saving, recalling and sharing settings easy.
Fully compatible with 32 and 64 bit DAWs (32/64 bit VST for OSX and Windows, 32/64 bit Audio Units for OSX, 32-bit RTAS for OSX and Windows, 64-bit AAX for OSX and Windows).
Twelve original reverberation algorithms:
Large Room. Designed to emulate big rooms with a wide spatial impression, with smooth “detuning” modulation.
Medium Room. Sparser than Large Room, with a more random modulation.
Bright Room. A lush, shinier-than-life reverb, with deep modulation and a somewhat slower attack.
Large Chamber. Smooth decay with consistent high echo density and subtle detuning modulation.
Dark Room. A hybrid between the grungy early digital reverbs and the modern algorithms found in ValhallaRoom, with reduced high frequency content, noisy yet lush randomized modulation, a HUGE spatial image, echo density ranging from grungy to dense while retaining clarity, and tons of mojo.
Dark Chamber. Similar to the original Large Chamber algorithm, but bigger and darker, with deeper detuning modulation.
Dark Space. A HUGE dark space, with a somewhat sparser early echo density and deep detuning modulation.
Nostromo. Deep, dark, echoing reverb. Very sparse early echo density, slow density build, random modulation, wide spatial image.
Narcissus. Dark, lush, wide, with random modulation that quickly builds into rich chorusing. The little sibling of Nostromo, but it is still big. Designed for low CPU consumption.
Sulaco. Dark with lush modulation, and a well-centered stereo image. The Late Size control can sweep the reverb from tight rooms to vast echoing spaces.
LV-426. A dark, deep space reverb, with the wide spatial image of Nostromo and Narcissus, but with a much higher initial echo density than either of those reverbs. LV-426 has a somewhat slower attack than the other modes, and has highly diffuse random modulation for lush decays.
Dense Room. Similar to Large Room, but with a denser distribution of early echos, and a tone that is brighter while still having the “darkness” of the Dark algorithms. Great for snare drums!
Changes in ValhallaRoom v1.1
New reverb mode: LV-426.
In keeping with the Nostromo/Narcissus/Sulaco tradition, this is a deep dark space verb. It is kind of a cross between Nostromo and Narcissus, but with a far higher earlier echo density than either of those reverb. LV-426 has a slower attack than the other reverb modes, and a lush, diffuse random modulation that produces beautiful long decays.
The LATE LowMult/Xover and LATE HighMult/Xover filters have been moved to a location where they act as tone controls.
Values of LowMult less than 1.0 allow you to dial in reverbs with less low frequency energy.
The LowXover control can be used to adjust the crossover freq of the low cut/boost.
64-bit VST for OSX. ValhallaRoom is now fully 32 and 64-bit compatible for both Windows and OSX.
Optimized CPU for Windows RTAS and VST32.
Fixed mono->stereo bypass bug in RTAS.
Window resizing bug fixed in Digital Performer.
